Safeguarding and Child Protection
What they don't tell you about Safeguarding and Child protection.
The biggest concern at Maiden Erlegh for young people is: county lines ( gangs, drugs, knives).
Two local ex-students have murdered people.
An extra category may soon be added as neglect implies the parents aren't trying hard enough, when they might be. Extra-familial harm should cover abuse. which would fall into neglect, but where the harm towards the child comes from outside of the familial unit. [Definition added to glossary].
Contextual Safeguarding - safety of children and measures in place, contextual to the environment of the school. [Definition added to glossary].
Transferrable risk - If you are involved in an incident outside of school and the risk is 'transferrable' your job may be at risk. [Definition added to glossary].
Sexual violence and harassment document has now been incorporated into KCSIE.
New from KCSiE 2022:
- Role of an appropriate adult in police attendance in School
- Online searches for shortlisted candidates
- IT filtering
- peer-on-peer is now child-on-child
- The term 'professional curiosity'.
Reading - CSPoA (Children Single point of access form).
Outcome of referrals: - Immediate protection and urgent action is required - EPO or PPO. (Three agencies have the power to take children into protected care - Social services, police, NSPCC.)
- Child Protection Enquiry - Section 47
- Child in Need Assessment - Section 17
- Early help Assessment - TAC (Team around a child)/TAF(Team around family)/FSW/YOS
- No further action
(If a child's parents are not engaging, sometimes this is given as a justification to close and de-escalate cases. Resulting in 'No further Action'.)
LADO - Local Authority Designated Officer - DSL for local authority to regulate claims made against adults.
OFSTED Inspections: Quality of Education
Behaviour and Attitudes
Personal Development
LEadership and management
Four grades:
1 - Outstanding
2 - Good
3 - Requires improvement
4 - Inadequate
Safeguarding is either Effective or ineffective. If the safeguarding is ineffective, then the whole school will be marked as Inadequate (1).
Suicidal Children:
You can assess risk by asking these questions:
- Are you thinking about killing yourself? (Direct and clear)
- Have you thought about how? (Assess type of danger)
- Have you thought about when and where?
- Do you have the means? (Assess risk level)
Have this conversation as soon as possible - A DSL does not have to be present, "If the child is talking to you, there's a reason for that."
Virtual School:
A virtual head teacher, whose teams' job it is to come into school and have conversations with students that the parents ought to have with students who are looked after.
Locally they are called 'CLA' students. (Children that are Looked after, instead of LAC).
You must be prepared to think the unthinkable. Trust your instincts.
If a child asks for a parent to be removed from Bromcom, the child has a right to request this - Child must explain why and the child must be competent to make the decision.
The child must be informed of the consequences (inability to contact, parents evening absence) and then the child must write a letter to the headmaster.
Maximising the Role of the Tutor
What does it mean to be an effective tutor?
There are in the region of 60 young carers at Maiden Erlegh.
"A form tutor is a teacher whose subject is the students themselves."
My response to the role of a form tutor:
Pastoral support
Rolemodelling
Ensuring student welfare across and inbetween subject studies
Offer advice and insight into learning
PSHE guidance and teaching
Inform students about detentions and events of the day.
Recognise needs and install support plans
Celebrate successes
Advising staff on how to support them.
Role of the tutor, responses:
Constant and supportive staff member.
Students can talk to you a bit more openly.
It's a different relationship, beyond teaching.
'A form tutor can be akin to a pupil's second parent (the first point of contact pupils will turn to for help and advice).'
Know your students.
Six roles of an effective tutor:
Mentor - provide support.
Administrator - registers, contact home.
Advocate - Make sure you get the best for your students.
Leader - Model the behaviours you respect from your students.
Instructor - engage in the delivery of personal development and deliver engaging lessons.
Assistant - Help them organise themselves.
Set out a weekly timetable and show them what the expectations are for each student.
Monday morning praise - celebrate the achievements of prior week.
PD curriculum
What issues might you face during personal development? - Safeguarding disclosures
- Managing safeguarding events within a classroom of students
- Individual children needs
Conversations about detentions are a great opportunity to show advocacy for a child.
What should I expect as a form tutor?
Contacting home - email praise to parents also.
Staff feedback
Admin - The register is the most important thing.
Use the role of the tutor to gain pastoral experience.
Head of year:
Manages the tutor team
Assemblages lessons on a range of themes and topics
Safeguards the children, may be asked to meet with police officers.
Supports the teaching staff in supporting the students
Communicates expectations
Strategically picks battles
Gives warmth and empathy to the inconsolable student.
Justifies decisions to skeptical staff.
Delegates, knows the children and looks at the data
Tracks behaviour and attendance
This year we're focussing heavily on revision.
Restorative justice measures - 15 minutes.
What do you think?
What do you think the effect is on everyone else?
- Instant restorative approach script: (additional script questions available through the school.

IVP doccument for students that are fluying just below the radar.
