Why do we need a national voice?

We must make sense, have compelling arguments and present solutions if we want to see real, strategic political change.

"You are dangerous, you empower children to think differently and be critical in a really significant way.'" - Michelle Gregson (NSEAD).

Learning Opportunity in art, craft and design across all key stages have reduced significantly.

The time allocated for art and design in the last five years have decreased.

There are fewer jobs for secondary art and design teachers in England than ten years ago.

By 2017, the total number of Art and design GCSE candidates have dropped to a record low candidate numbers.

"The choice to be an art and design teacher today is a politcal choice to stand up for your subject, to be dangerous, disrupt and give children space for their voice." - Michelle Gregson (NSEAD).

Full or partial merger between Design and technology and Art and design may happen soon.

Issues for the subject:

The Gender Divide?

Of the children taking art and design, 2/3 are girls and 1/3 are boys.

A curriculum that doesn't speak to or represent the interests of the students.

Words to action?

NSEAD and our subject must play an important and active role in disrupting, challenging and removing racism in education.

'We call for: A strategy for equality and opportunity in art, craft and design education that encourages diversity, inclusivity and achievement for all learners' - Anti-racist statement, THe Action Group for Art, Craft and Design Education.

A manifesto for art, craft and design education 2024

NSEAD Council May 2024.
